چکیده

This paper analyzes issues which appear when supporting pruning operations in tabled LP. A version of the once/1 control predicate tailored for tabled predicates is presented, and an implementation is discussed and evaluated. The use of once/1 with answer-on-demand strategies makes it possible to avoid computing unneeded solutions for problems which can benefit from tabled LP but in which only a single solution is needed, such as model checking and planning. The proposed version of once/1 is also directly applicable to the efficient implementation of other optimizations, such as early completion, cut-fail loops (to, e.g., perform pruning at the toplevel), if-then-else, and constraint-based branch-and-bound optimization. Although once/1 still presents open issues such as dependencies of tabled solutions on program history, our experimental evaluation confirms that it provides an arbitrarily large efficiency improvement in several application areas.

Approximate Pruning in Tabled Logic Programming

Pruning provides an important tool for control of nondeterminism in Prolog systems. Current Tabled Prolog systems improve Prolog’s evaluation strategy in several ways, but lack satisfactory support for pruning operations. In this paper we present an extension to the evaluation mechanism of Tabled Prolog to support pruning. This extension builds on the concept of demand to select tables to prune...

A Simple Scheme for Implementing Tabled Logic Programming Systems Based on Dynamic Reordering of Alternatives

Tabled logic programming (LP) systems have been applied to elegantly and quickly solving very complex problems (e.g., model checking). However, techniques currently employed for incorporating tabling in an existing LP system are quite complex and require considerable change to the LP system. We present a simple technique for incorporating tabling in existing LP systems based on dynamically reor...

Abduction and Beyond in Logic Programming with Application to Morality

In this paper we emphasize two different aspects of abduction in Logic Programming (LP): (1) the engineering of LP abduction systems, and (2) application of LP abduction, complemented with other non-monotonic features, to model morality issues. For the LP engineering part, we present an implemented tabled abduction technique in order to reuse priorly obtained (and tabled) abductive solutions, f...

Speculative Computations in Or-Parallel Tabled Logic Programs

Pruning operators, such as cut, are important to develop efficient logic programs as they allow programmers to reduce the search space and thus discard unnecessary computations. For parallel systems, the presence of pruning operators introduces the problem of speculative computations. A computation is named speculative if it can be pruned during parallel evaluation, therefore resulting in waste...

Tabdual: a Tabled Abduction System for Logic Programs

Abduction has been on the back burner in logic programming, as abduction can be too difficult to implement, and costly to perform, in particular if abductive solutions are not tabled. On the other hand, current Prolog systems, with their tabling mechanisms, are mature enough to facilitate the introduction of tabling abductive solutions (tabled abduction) into them. Our contributions are as foll...
